Dexter of Laud

Dex being his typical silly self
This is Dexter, a beautiful, little goofy fellow that came to me in July of 2011. Dexter came to be my compliment stud to Mojito, as his grandfather is Am/Can CH Mar-Rich's Bull's Eye Perfect-L, Mo's dad. Dexter has wonderful structure and conformation, and I had plans to show him to champion. Sadly my vet discovered Dexter has Grade 2 luxating patellas on both back knees. That means his knee caps can move out of place and if they get worse, could become painful and cause him to limp, and even possibly need surgery to correct. We do not know if this is genetic or injury related, however luxating patellas, or LPs, are genetically inherited, meaning they can be passed along to offspring, so Dexter cannot be CHIC certified, and therefore cannot be used as a stud here at True Shot Chihuahuas. At this time Dexter shows no outward symptoms of his LPs whatsoever. We have never witnessed him limping or favoring either back leg at all. Because Dex is already almost 2 years old, we expect his knees will never progress much farther than they are now, and will likely never even cause him any issues throughout his lifetime.
Unfortunately this summer I made a grave error in judgement, and bred Dexter to Ally before I had his knees tested. A trusted friend checked his knees for me and did not find anything, so in my excitement to catch Ally while she was in heat, I bred Dexter to her before I had my vet check him over thoroughly. Upon second opinion to confirm he did indeed have LPs, it was too late to turn back the decision, so Ally recently delivered an amazingly nice litter sired by Dexter. Had Dexter's knees checked out, these puppies would be sold for $1000 to $1500, as Ally has produced multiple champions and Dexter would easily become a champion himself, and has champion parents. While Ally has wonderfully tight patellas, I cannot guarantee that this litter of pups will not develop luxating patellas at some point in their lifetime, and therefore will be selling the puppies as pets only for much less than they should be. Considering that the vast majority of breeders never test their dog's patellas at all, I feel these are very appropriate prices for puppies of this high quality.
IF you have any questions at all regarding Dexter or his litter of puppies with Ally, feel free to ask! I will be as open and honest with you as I possibly can. |
